Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. Dr. Singh, who served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was admitted to the emergency ward at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi at approximately 8 PM.
Dr. Singh had been battling age-related health issues in recent months. He retired from the Rajya Sabha in April 2024 after an illustrious 33-year tenure. According to a statement released by AIIMS, Dr. Singh suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at home, and despite immediate resuscitative efforts and swift transportation to the hospital, he could not be revived and was declared deceased at 9:51 PM.
Dr. Singh is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Kaur Singh, and their three daughters.
Following the news of his hospitalization, Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi were among those who rushed to the hospital to offer support.
Dr. Singh, widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic liberalization in the early 1990s, served as Finance Minister under Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao. His policies in 1991 are credited with pulling India from the brink of economic collapse and initiating reforms that transformed the nation’s economy.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda expressed his condolences on social media, stating: “The passing of Former Prime Minister and Economist Shri Manmohan Singh ji is an immense loss for the nation. A visionary statesman, his contributions to the welfare of the people and to India’s progress will forever be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Dr. Singh’s passing marks the end of a remarkable era in Indian politics and economics. His legacy continues to inspire many in their pursuit of progress and nation-building.
